Discussion

Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).

This simple type of grave-cover is not easy to date. It is known as a form in Merovingian Gaul, but with different cross shapes. Comparable covers are found at Hexham (nos. 16-17), and until one is discovered in a dated context, the date range must remain wide. However, the rounded ends of the arms may indicate a late rather than an early date.
