Description

Fragment of a baluster shaft with five concentric grooves, lathe-turned.

Discussion

The turning on this fragment is very fine. It seems to be a more elaborate piece than Hart 11, and nearer to the fine early work of Monkwearmouth (Introduction, pp. 24-5).

Date
Late seventh to early eighth century
