Evidence for Discovery
Found in September 1843 in digging drain near South Terrace. Earliest account implies that grave was c. 4 ft below surface and near edge of cliffs, `and at the spot where they supposed the head had rested they found the stone'.

Description

The back and sides are smoothly dressed.

A (broad): Set at some distance from the edge of the rectangular stone is a lightly incised border. Inside, the ground is quartered by an incised cross, type F1. Where the terminals reach the frame this is interrupted. In the lower quadrants is an inscription in Anglo-Saxon capitals:

 [—A.E] II [ALEVB]

The name cannot certainly be linked with any recorded form.
