Ring-headed cross, ring type A, arm type E6. The arms are outlined by a deep groove and a flat-band moulding which is recessed from the edge. The centre of the cross on both faces is plain.
Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).
Such plain cross-heads are difficult to date, and the ring-headed type has been copied in later periods as the `Celtic type' par excellence. However, the similarity of this to the cross in the market place, which is clearly much more ancient than the shaft which supports it, could imply that this is an ancient head. It is possible that both these crosses defined part of the monastic enclosure.
