Discussion

Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).

This type of cross is difficult to date. Its shape could have derived from a type like Whalley (Collingwood 1927, fig. 132), but the plain head type without mouldings seems to be post-Conquest. The very unweathered appearance of this head creates the suspicion that it could be comparatively recent.

Date
Second half of eleventh century(?)
