Description

A (broad): All that survives is the heavy convex central boss surrounded by a heavy roll moulding. In the centre of the boss is a smoothed hollow.

Discussion

Collingwood reconstructs this head, probably rightly, as the topping for shaft 1. However, there is not enough surviving to be sure of the shape, although Collingwood gives it as B9, but it could just as well be B10 or E10 (see Tynemouth 6). The central sinking was possibly to hold a setting in the manner of Reculver, Kent (Peers 1927, 253, fig. 9). No fragment of the plant-scroll seen by Collingwood is now visible.
