Discussion

Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date)

This piece has been regarded as Anglo-Saxon, initially by Kendrick (1941, 10), who saw it as the remains of a round-shafted cross. But there is no evidence to support this dating. It is possibly one section of a large stone column of indeterminate date, although that it was originally part of a Roman or medieval building component appears feasible.
