Description

Hogback, type h. Below a worn ridge there are traces of three rows of tegulation (possibly of type 9) on both sides.

A (long): A strip of running spiral scroll set over a four-strand plain plait.

C (long): Vestigial traces of two rows of plain plait or interlace, which Collingwood (1923a, 125) interpreted as closed circuit pattern F, set over a four-strand plain plait.

Discussion

There is an exact parallel for this ornamental scheme of scroll and plait combined with a double row of interlace at Gainford (co. Durham) in the Tees valley (Cramp 1984, pl. 71). The tall, narrow proportions are typical of hogbacks in the north-west of England. There is no trace of the figure on the western gable-end which was identified by Collingwood (1923a, 125).
