The base is roughly hollowed out and roughly dressed with coarse diagonal tooling.

Discussion

Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).

The shallow hole and the rough finish of this piece cast some doubt as to whether or not this is a cross-base or a trough. In the light of the large number of cross fragments from this site it is possible that it is a base.
