Description

Though no border mouldings are visible, it is possible in certain lights to discern relief decoration resembling a large bird's head with curved beak. It is equally possible, however, that this apparent ornament is merely the result of differential weathering.

Discussion

Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).

If correctly interpreted as a bird's head, then the closest parallel is afforded by material from Viking-age York (Lang 1978b, fig. 8.5).
