The only visible face of the shaft carries a very worn plant-scroll. One spiral scroll survives more wholly than its neighbour. Remains of a berry cluster are contained within it.

Discussion

This is one of the few Anglian pieces from the East Riding; only the lost Patrington fragment (Ills. 749–50), and Gilling East 1 from Ryedale (Ill. 440), carry plant-scroll. The absence of leaves and the very formal medallion-like scrolls containing the berries suggest a degenerating stage of the motif.
