Description

The grave-cover expands slightly towards the head, which is slightly convex, and is roughly broken in two about half-way along its length.

A (top): Decorated with a Latin cross (type B6, with elongated upper arm), the upper arm of which expands and stops just short of the head. The lateral arms are parallel-sided and of slightly unequal length, the left-hand one stopping short of the edge, while the right-hand one runs off the edge.

Discussion

Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).

The decoration of this carving is more closely related to that of the series from Chithurst, Sussex (e.g. no. 5; Ill. 224), than to that of the other covers from this site. A comparable (eleventh-century) date seems likely.

Date
Stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date in eleventh century
