Object type: Fragment of lathe-turned column or baluster

Measurements: H. 8.3 > 4.5 cm (3.3 > 1.8 in); W. 8.8 > 2 cm (3.5 > 0.8 in); D. 3.8 > 1 cm (1.5 > 0.4 in)

Stone type: Pale yellow, medium-grained, oolitic limestone, with evenly sized (0.3–0.4 mm) ooliths in a calcite matrix; Combe Down Oolite, Great Oolite Formation of the Bath area, Great Oolite Group, Middle Jurassic

Found in archaeological excavation north of Winchester cathedral in 1966 in wall of later medieval chapel built around tomb of St Swithun; Final Phase 74 (Provisional Phase 1511), mid thirteenth-century

Present Condition

No bed face survives; the carved surface is well preserved.

Description

Reconstructed diameter of column 42.4 cm (16.6 in). The moulding is composed of a central band, 4.6 cm wide, with a step, 1.1 cm deep, to the next element above and a step, 0.8 cm deep, to the element below, which itself projects 1 cm.

Discussion

The drum probably came from the tenth-century westwork of Old Minster.
