Present Location
Winchester City Museum, Historic Resources Centre, Hyde House, Winchester, accessions no. 2943 WS 203
Evidence for Discovery
Found in archaeological excavation north of Winchester cathedral in 1964 in rubble deriving from nave or baptistery of Old Minster; Final Phase 58 (Provisional Phase 1020), c. 1093-4
Church Dedication
Old Minster
Present Condition
To the left there is a dressed face, with traces of mortar or rendering; this may simply be the left face of the carving. The carved surface is bruised.
Description
This is a large slightly facetted Z-twist, turning at a low angle. The strands are 3 cm wide. To the left there is a plain area, 1.7 cm wide, which ends in a dressed face which may itself form a plain right-angled projection in the decoration.
Discussion
The twist is noticeably flatter than that on Winchester (Old Minster) nos. 54 and 57, but no. 56 may be part of the same scheme.
Date
Seventh to ninth century or later
