Description

Fowler (1913–14, 410) records that 'Mr Laing left notes about a dozen uninscribed or fragmentary stones besides the above, one with a chalice, one with "Saxon markings", and five with incised crosses'.

Discussion

Appendix C item (lost stones for which no illustration has survived).

Since J. T. Fowler was an experienced and active recorder of pre-Conquest stone sculpture, it is probable that this was indeed an early fragment. However, there is no basis for classifying it further. It could perhaps have been Bardney 1.
