Evidence for Discovery
Davies (1912–13, 143) mentions a third stone at Market Deeping, in addition to nos. 1 and 2 (pp. 225–6). It was then outside the east end of the chancel. In 1926, however, Davies described only two fragments (1926, 16) and it is presumed, therefore, that the third piece was lost between 1913 and 1926.

Description

Davies gave no description of this stone, beyond calling it a 'fragment' and including it in his list of 'portions of Saxon work' at this site (with nos. 1 and 2 above). It is probable, then, that it was similar in general appearance to these stones, perhaps also carrying interlace.

Discussion

Appendix C item (lost stones for which no illustration has survived).

It may be that this fragment belonged to one of the monuments now represented by nos. 1 or 2.
