Description

A small fragment from the border of a much larger panel. One edge is preserved, on which is a roll with scarcely detectable cable moulding. Inside this border is a run of step decoration type 1 (Cramp 1991, fig. 27).

Discussion

It is not possible to judge whether this fragment is from a cover, a shaft or some other category of object. It is in a stone of somewhat different appearance from Normanton 1a–b but it might be unwise to rule out a connection. It is probably of tenth-or eleventh-century date.

Date
Probably tenth or eleventh century
