Like Stow 7, the stone has been tooled diagonally as a building stone in the fine ashlar masonry of the archway: the incised decoration is cut through this tooling. The graffito forms a good clear depiction of a ship, measuring approximately 46 × 28 cm (18 × 11 in), with a mast stepped approximately centrally and associated rigging. The forms of prow and stern are unclear: a diagonal incision towards the right may be intended to indicate a steering oar or quarter rudder. Other incisions are difficult to evaluate and are not necessarily coherently associated.
Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).
