Present Condition

Description

The top is worn, but part of a flat, curved ridge remains; Greenwell suggested it might have had cable moulding.

A (long) : On the bombé roof pitch is a six-petalled rosette within a sunken circle. Next to it is a long-stemmed cross or sword, lying horizontally. Below the eaves, the side has been drastically cut back to a flat plane. Along it is a strip of sixteen elliptical lozenges between narrow roll mouldings. The ellipses touch at their broadest points where the compass hole-points are visible, as well as a transverse axial line.

B and C (ends) : Damaged.

C (long) : The only feature is a series of parallel diagonal lines.

Discussion

Nearly all the decorative features appear to be the result of re-cutting. The intrusive planes of face A destroy the symmetry of the monument.

Date
First half of tenth century to later Middle Ages
