Description

A: Four units of spiralled pattern D are linked by paired diagonalling strands. The strands are modelled, but most of the crossing points are worn away. There is some evidence for edge mouldings.

B–C, E–F: Recut.

D: Worn.

Discussion

Similar panels of double-stranded pattern E are popular in the more formal geometric interlace patterns north of the Tees (Cramp 1984, 17, pls. 37, 189; 220, 1254), but pattern D is more unusual. Once again, this piece may imply some specific contact with that area. Since the stone types are not identical, nos. 1 and 2 may have come from different shafts.
