Description

A plate-head, with recessed plain disc. The cross-arms, type B6, are wedge-shaped with broad V-shaped arm-pits.

A (broad) : The cross has a narrow plain edge moulding. In the centre is a domed boss, surmounting a Crucifixion. Christ's head and sloping shoulders fill the upper limb; broad three-fingered hands with prominent thumbs occupy the lateral limbs; and legs, astride, are in the lower arm.

B and D (narrow) : Plain.

C (broad) : The cross has a plain narrow perimeter moulding. In the centre is a less prominent domed boss, and the arms are filled by debased, median-incised twist in flat strand.

E (top) : A ridge runs across the arm-tip, linking the broad faces.

Discussion

The Crucifixion, though very stylised, has Irish characteristics: for example, its position and the large hands. The spread legs demonstrate an un-nailed type. Compare with Thornton Steward 1 (Ills. 788–9) and Thornton Watlass 1 (Ill. 812).

Date
First half of tenth century
