Description

A type E10 cross-head with a ring (b).

A (broad) : The ring is plain and slightly recessed with a well cut bevelled section. The cross has widely curved arm-pits and convex arm-tips only slightly protruding beyond the ring. There is a modelled edge moulding which extends into the neck of the shaft. It contains an inner modelled moulding, which is expanded at the neck. In the centre is a low relief domed boss.

B and D (narrow) and E (top) : Plain.

C (broad) : As face A, except that the inner moulding is omitted.

Discussion

Despite its plain decorative character, the cross is neatly carved, the rounded edges being a notable feature. The wheel-head indicates a tenth-century date. It should be compared with Coverham 2 (Ill. 126) and Brigham 7C in Cumbria (Bailey and Cramp 1988, 77, ill. 153).

Date
First half of tenth century
