Description

Part of a type A1 squared cross with curved arm-pits.

A (broad, interior) : There is a plain edge moulding. In the centre is a defaced boss (4 inches in diameter). The straight-sided cross-arms contain a looping strand whose knots are somewhat disorganised, two of them with bar terminals and an incorporated free ring. The broken arm had a different pattern.

B and D (narrow) : Built in.

C (broad, exterior) : As face A.

Discussion

The squared cross shape is unusual in Yorkshire but is one of the simplest to construct. The loops in the cross-arms are probably echoes of the motif on the cross-heads at Brompton: the 'Brompton loop' (Fig. 12, p. 47). Like much of Forcett's sculpture, this is a rustic response to more stylish carving nearby.
