Description

This piece is edged by a broad outer and fine inner roll moulding. Within is an interlace pattern with fine modelled strands against a smoothly-dressed, open background. On the right is a register of pattern A with an included terminal, and with the diagonals forming a glide to a second register, possibly but not certainly the same pattern.

Discussion

The interlace with its fine, high, rounded strand and the layout of its pattern elements invites comparison with the Ripon imposts (no. 9, Ills. 671–5) and its parallels, rather than with the imposts at Ledsham (no. 4, Ills. 463–6). This piece could be part of a shaft, reused as a building stone, but there is no sign of a taper, and the width of the piece is also much the same as the height of the Ripon imposts. If it is part of a string-course, it reinforces the idea of an early church at Darfield.
