Evidence for Discovery
A sundial 'roughly cut on a gatepost at Mousehouse on Emley Moor' which Haigh had not seen except in a rubbing, was thought by him to be 'certainly very old'. Apparently it had a circle of about ten inches in diameter, divided into eighths 'but not very accurately' (Haigh 1879a, 154). Collingwood (1915a, 173) recorded the sundial noted by Haigh, though without any suggestion that he had seen it or knew of its exact location. It could not be found on visits to the area.
