Evidence for Discovery
Found 1995 in the mill building at Fountains Abbey as a loose stone wrapped in sacking and placed there in modern times (Susan Harrison, English Heritage, pers. comm.).

Broken, but the visible surface is in good condition.
Description

A cross-head of type E12 with an expanded upper arm.

A (broad): The face is edged by a roll moulding, within which the head is plain except for a large central boss surrounded by a roll moulding. There are traces of red paint in the grooves of the moulding.

B (narrow): Missing

C (broad): Similar to face A, although the central boss does not have a surrounding moulding.

D (narrow) and E (top): Plain

Discussion

This cross is very plain, and it is only the hammerhead form which places it in the Anglo-Scandinavian period.
