Object type: Part of cross-head
Measurements: H. 38 cm (15 in); W. 19 cm (7.5 in); D. 21 cm (8.3 in)
Stone type: Medium-grained feldspathic, slightly micaceous Millstone Grit. Body colour of fresh rock very pale brown (10YR 7/4), however surface burnt all over (including the broken surfaces) to a light reddish brown colour (5YR 6/4). It looks like the grooves on the faces were ornamented with hematite or limonite now having a red colour (2.5YR 6/4). Given the dubious origin for this cross-head the provenance can only be tentative. However, this is very reminiscent of the Brimham Grit, Namurian, Upper Carboniferous. [J.S.]

A cross-head of type E12 with an expanded upper arm.
A (broad): The face is edged by a roll moulding, within which the head is plain except for a large central boss surrounded by a roll moulding. There are traces of red paint in the grooves of the moulding.
B (narrow): Missing
C (broad): Similar to face A, although the central boss does not have a surrounding moulding.
D (narrow) and E (top): Plain
This cross is very plain, and it is only the hammerhead form which places it in the Anglo-Scandinavian period.
