Under back pew in church, formerly in upper chamber of church tower

Probably the 'crosshead now in the vestry' recorded by Wallis (1921, 11), but see Whalley 10.
Church Dedication
St Mary
Present Condition
Heavily worn, particularly on face C
Description

The fragment represents the central element of a (presumably) free-armed cross-head with parts of two (?lateral) arms surviving, together with the stub of a third arm; the wide curves suggest a head of type B9.

A (broad): A roll-moulding border survives on the upper curves and there are traces of worn interlace at the centre.

B and D (narrow): Lost

C (broad): The only trace of ornamentation on this face are the remains of a central boss.

Discussion

Too little survives for useful comment.

Date
Uncertain; possibly tenth century
