Only one face is visible.
A (long): Edged by a flat-band moulding and decorated with `post and rail'. On the left a single baluster turns the corner. It is divided from the next baluster by five straight horizontal `rails'. Then there is a group of five `rails' and either three or four balusters. All the balusters are shown as straight cylinders without flared caps and bases.
Although of the same height as the rest and using the same formula of groups of three and single balusters as found on 25, and straight `rails' as on 26, the shape of the balusters is different. Balustrade ornament of this straight cylinder type is also known from Jarrow (nos. 26-7 and 32). At Jarrow the straight cylinder and the Roman type of baluster occur separately and together. It therefore seems as though this is a contemporary use at Hexham (Introduction, p. 25).
