Description

One face only is carved and an area of 2.8 cm (1 in) is dressed smooth on either side of the face. The rest of the sides and the back of the stone are finely dressed and covered with mortar.

A: In the centre is a fine relief cable ornament edged at the top with a flat-band and at the base by a roll moulding.

Discussion

This decorative strip is almost as wide as some of the Monkwearmouth plain strips, which were discovered in the excavations of the monastic buildings (Cramp 1969, fig. 24, 1), although it is more crudely finished. The only other strip from Jarrow (no. 15) is differently decorated and of different proportions, and so could not belong to the same feature.
