Description

A (long): Part of a frieze with a deep plain band at the top, a sharply cut narrow groove below, outlining twenty-two closely packed straight tubular balusters supported on a narrow flat-band moulding. There is evidence of fine tooling of a 1 mm point above the baluster frieze.

Discussion

Although there are varieties in the miniature baluster types at Jarrow and it would not be impossible to see the tubular type (see no. 14) as contemporary with the type found on 25, this piece gives the impression of being cut in a different way. The flat surfaces are rougher, the grooved outlines sharper, and the whole appearance `unfinished'. If part of the same scheme as 25, then it could be a later addition or replacement.

Date
Late seventh to mid eighth century
