Description

The shape of the cross-head is not determinable but the arm is supported by a ring, type 1. The arms and shaft appear to be absolutely plain with no edge mouldings. The head and shaft are carved in one block with the lower vertical arm projecting at a sharp angle from the shaft.

Discussion

Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).

The shaft type is the same as Sockburn 10. It is possible that the original shape of the cross-head was E8, like Chollerton 1 and 2, but there is a significant difference between 1 and 3 in that the ring is narrower than the depth of the head and is inset from the ends of the arms. It is therefore possibly typologically earlier than 1.
