Description

Only one face is visible.

A (broad): The lower arm of the cross has been broken away. The head is carved from one round plate. The arms which are type E8 are sharply cut in relief and there is a small sunken roundel in the centre of the head.

Discussion

Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).

This could have been the head of a cross similar to 1, or it could be part of a short head- or foot-stone similar to Newcastle 1. The sunken roundel in the centre may be compared with Easington.

Date
Late eleventh century
