Description

Only one face of the shaft, now lying on its side, is visible.

?B (narrow): The face consists of one complete panel surrounded by a fine roll moulding. The panel terminates at what must originally have been the lower end with a plain recessed background. A double pattern E terminal develops into two long diagonals which cross a free ring and terminate at the top in a single pattern E knot with median-incised strands.

Discussion

This type of interlace in which free rings are linked by long diagonals occurs also at Aycliffe (nos. 5 and 7) and is found in a similar form on Gainford 10.

Date
