Description

Small tapering fragment with right-angled rebate cut into the front and side faces. Both faces of the rebate are carved in low relief with vertical 'strand' mouldings.

Discussion

Little survives of the carving on this small piece, but the 'strands' are probably the stems of foliage, or the fleshy body and ribs of broad leaves similar to the acanthus palmettes described under Gloucester St Oswald 13 and 14 (p. 216). The fact that the carved faces are on a right-angled recess suggests that this should be seen as part of a surround or frame, perhaps for an opening or for a piece of church furniture.
