Object type: String-course fragment

Measurements: H. 25.4 cm (10 in); W. 21 cm (8.3 in); D. unknown

Stone type: Sandstone, fairly hard, very fine- to medium-grained (0.1 to 0.4 mm), greyish orange (10YR 7/4). Mainly sub-angular quartz. Mostly covered in whitewash. Grinshill Sandstone which is a variant of the Helsby or Bromsgrove Sandstone formations, part of the Sherwood Sandstone Group and middle Triassic in age.

Present Location

Set into the east basement wall of the shop, high up to the right of the fireplace.

Evidence for Discovery

Found in wall of cellar, during removal of machinery (pers. comm. M. Stokes).

Description

Interlace-decorated string-course fragment. The design and treatment of the interlace is the same as that on no. 1.
