Appendix E item (overlap architectural sculpture).

Early capital. Part of a sculpted capital of volute type, loose in the nave. The capital stood above a three-quarter shaft, but is now missing its upper parts including the volutes themselves. The neck of the capital is decorated with foliage sculpture in low-relief. Centrally placed between the two forward facing volutes is a 'cat's' mask, from the mouth of which issue foliage trails. These have stems articulated with a central groove, and develop in two approximately symmetrical interlacing whorls to either side of the mask. The strands terminate in sprays of small leaves of crude 'acanthus' type. There is no astragal. This capital is discussed further on p. 70 above.
