Appendix E item (overlap architectural sculpture).
Set of two chancel arch capitals. In situ. Two nook-shaft capitals of the same design set beneath a bold chamfered abacus on a separate stone. They sit above a bold astragal with a double cable-moulding. Above the astragal, the sloping part of the neck is decorated with a row of stiff upright leaves of 'palmette' form. The leaves are scooped out and have rounded tips. Above, the upright part of the neck is divided by a broad band decorated with a cable-moulding. At the angle the capital's volute is represented only by a stiff moulded chevron. Between the angle 'volute' and the edge of the capitals the 'lower abacus' is subdivided into two panels by a vertical fillet, hanging down from the abacus proper and decorated with further cable-moulding. To either side of each fillet the 'lower abacus' is decorated with deeply incised lines radiating downwards from the angle of the capital, where the tip of the volute should be. These capitals are discussed further on p. 71 above.
