First recorded in 1889 when stone b built into west wall of porch, though a publication of 1888 may refer to stone a. Both probably found during restoration of church in 1878 (Calverley 1888f, 166; idem 1891c, 231, 235; Collingwood 1924b, 353)

Description

The two fragments form non-adjacent parts of the same shaft, one continuous panel decorating each face on the surviving pieces. Fragment a preserves, wholly or in part, a plain border marking the top of the shaft on three faces; the ornament on all sides is bordered laterally by a flat-band moulding.

A (broad): Spiral-scroll with quasi-foliate forms, the outline pocked and less heavily worked on fragment b.

B (narrow): Three-strand plain stopped-plait.

C (broad): Spiral-scroll with quasi-foliate forms.

D (narrow): Three-strand plain stopped-plait.
