Description

The head is plain and without edge mouldings.

A and C (broad): The upper arm is an orthodox type E6, but the horizontal arms are stunted and are more like B10.

B and D (narrow): Plain.

Discussion

Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).

Such plain heads are impossible to date closely and could date from before or after the Conquest (cf. Whittingham 1, Northumberland (Cramp 1984, pls. 256; 257, 1399)). A complete cross of a similar type exists at Kirkhaugh, Northumberland (ibid., pls. 241–4).
