Rectangular cross-shaft. The visible ornament is divided into two panels separated by a flat-band moulding; a similar moulding provides the lateral borders. The relief decoration in the upper panel cannot now be certainly interpreted; in various lights the remains suggest either interlace strands, or a ribbon animal with backward-thrown head, or a profile animal with tail and backward-thrown head. In the panel below is decoration which might be interpreted as the upper part of a human head surrounded by hair and a halo.
If correctly interpreted, the remains in the lower panel suggest that the carving is in an Anglian tradition, if not necessarily of Anglian date. The head, halo and hair of figures from Ilkley, Yorkshire and Halton, Lancashire provide parallels (Collingwood 1927a, figs. 63, 92).
