Description

Only one face is visible.

A: Two irregular volutes are arranged diagonally, coiling in contrary directions. The scrolls are flattened.

Discussion

Collingwood's drawing (1907, fig. o on 387) suggests, mistakenly, an animal. Such 'belated scrolls' are the last vestige of Anglian plant-scroll in Anglo-Scandinavian rustic pieces. It could be an echo of the taste for scrolls at Levisham, but the piece is very fragmentary.
