Evidence for Discovery

Church Dedication
St Mary Bishophill Senior
Present Condition
Top broken away; chipped, and partly recut on face D
Description

Only two faces are visible; traces of red pigment survive on each. The decoration is crisp.

A (broad): The bottom 10 cm of the base is undecorated. Within a narrow roll-moulded frame, set in from the edge by 2.5 cm, is a roughly cut ring-knot: a bungled version, with very broad median-incised strands. The top is broken away.

B (narrow) and C (broad): Built in.

D (narrow): The outer edge moulding is damaged. Within it is a narrow moulding framing a free ring and long diagonals with a bar terminal below, using broad, median-incised strands.

Discussion

This is a clumsily cut piece, but the attempt at the ring-knot and ring-twist is firmly in the Anglo-Scandinavian tradition of simplified, closed circuit interlace. The red pigment may have enhanced the carving, but it can hardly have concealed the bungling of the knot on face A.
