Description

Only two faces are visible.

A (broad): The top appears to be semicircular. The edge moulding is flat and plain, and contains a concentric run of smallish pellets. Within the head of the panel is a pattern F loop and U-bend terminals, using median-incised strands.

B (narrow): There is a pair of pellet mouldings separated by a plain one, defining a plain rectangular panel within.

Discussion

End-stones were found in situ in the Minster cemetery, but none with the rounded top of this monument. In this respect it closely resembles one from Aycliffe (no. 12), co. Durham (Cramp 1984, I, 46–7, II, pl. 14, 57–9), though the ornamental repertoire is distinctive of York, and may compared with the modestly decorated shafts described above (see nos. 6–7).
