Description
On a sub-rectangular panel is a large circular relief dial delimited by a low relief frame having a median roll moulding. The gnomon hole is represented by an irregular hollow in the centre of the dial, the lower half of which is calibrated. There is a pair of lateral lines, a vertical, and a line mid-way between each lateral and the vertical. Each line is incised, terminates on the frame, and is crossed short of its outer end by an incised line with drilled ends. From the outer edge of the frame develop four plant stems, one running into each of the corners of the panel, and each terminating in a convex-sided, pointed-ended, hollowed leaf. This is flanked by two similar out-turned leaves, the hollows of which are carried down the short stems.
Discussion
Although this piece is ex situ, a pre-Conquest date can be argued from the very close relationship between it and the dial from near-by Corhampton (no. 1), which is in situ in a late pre-Conquest fabric. A very similar dial is also known from Winchester (St Michael; Ill. 671), although again ex situ.
Date
Tenth to eleventh century
