Discussion

The two pieces are very likely to belong to the same monument, although different faces are now visible. The cover which can be reconstructed (Fig. 9) has the characteristic style of carving and layout of motifs of the mid-Kesteven group of grave-covers (Chapter V). The fact that the two panels to left and right of the cross-arm on the lid are not symmetrically arranged is somewhat unusual (though not unique within the group – cf. West Allington 1, Ill. 384). The mid-Kesteven group of covers is dated to the period between the mid tenth and early eleventh century.
