Description

A (broad) : A splayed cross-arm with slightly curving arm-pits, its type 1a ring survives as stumps. The edge moulding expands in width at each side and is broad across the top. The panel contains a cross in relief with splayed arms and angular arm-pits, set on a narrow shaft with a transverse bar at the neck and another lower down. The corners are filled by two small pellets.

B and D (narrow) : Worn, with the broken stump of the ring.

C (broad) : The edge moulding is as on face A. The panel contains the deeply cut cross-joined terminal of a four-cord plait in narrow strand, stemming from two vertical strands at the neck.

Discussion

The 'processional cross' is a rare feature, though West Witton 2 also features one (Ill. 881).
