Overview
Present Location
Unknown. 'In the old church' in 1911 (Collingwood 1911, 301), and still there in the 1930s when it was photographed by Walters (1936, 6). 'A trefoiled Decorated niche with shields in the corners has been built into the east wall; a fragment of richly carved stone standing in it is the right arm of an Anglian cross' (Pontefract and Hartley [1936], 125). Noted in parentheses but not seen by Pevsner (1966). Said to be missing in 1986, according to the records of the Cleveland County Archaeology Churches Survey (Tees Archaeology S.M.R., 0511). Possibly the fragment loaned to Middlesbrough College of Art in the 1960s which is now lost; see Upleatham 8 (old church, St Andrew) in Appendix C (p. 300).
Evidence for Discovery
None. The old church was abandoned in 1836, though burials continued in the churchyard (Ord 1846, 349). Presumably the fragment noted in 1885 by Bishop G. F. Browne, although this is listed as 'fr. of cr. sh.' (Allen and Browne 1885, 352).
Church Dedication
St Andrew
Present Condition
Unobtainable, but apparently very worn when drawn by Collingwood and photographed by Walters
Description

(after Collingwood 1911)

One arm of a cross, type A10, with the faint survival of a 'lorgnette' motif on one broad face and tangled interlace on the other. On the end of the arm a close-knit ring knot.

Discussion

This piece seems to be late in the 'lorgnette' group (see Chapter VI), as indicated by the ring knot.
