Discussion

This type of head is found elsewhere at Whitby and is something between B9 and 10. Despite its similarity to no. 1 (Ills. 897–9), this cannot be part of the same cross. Okasha has read the incisions on face C as a letter, but see below.

R.C.

Alleged inscription Okasha (1971, 121, pl. 122) reported traces of an inscription, apparently, to judge from her plate, on face C, the only recognizable letter of which she took to be an N or an H. The General Editor saw no indication of there having been an inscription on this stone when she inspected it. If this cross-head ever carried an inscription, it is more likely that it would have appeared on face A, which is framed with an edge moulding, than on face C, which is plain and was presumably the 'back' of the cross.
