In the first of two manuscript notebooks containing the author's catalogue entries, there is a note under Barningham which reads: 'Oral tradition of a piece built into a house in the village' (Durham, Corpus archive: J. Lang, 'Anglo-Saxon Corpus, North Riding, Yorkshire', I, p. 1).
