Description

Type c, niche. One almost complete end beast and one four-clawed paw of another survive. The beast is muzzled. It has pricked ears and round eyes. The ridge it clasps in its mouth is decorated with step pattern 1.

A and C (long): Both divided into three panels, separated by flat-band mouldings. In each panel are two closed circuit loops. Below is a semicircular recess. The marks of a small punch and rough chisel are visible.

Discussion

The centre for niche type hogbacks seems to be Allertonshire and this type is very closely paralleled at Sockburn (nos. 17-18) and Ingleby Arncliffe, Yorkshire (Lang 1967, 66-70).

Date
